Online shopping is designed to make buying easy. That is useful, but it also means urgency can sometimes replace comparison. A few simple checks can help.
Ignore the timer first
Ask whether you would still want the product if the countdown clock disappeared. If the answer is no, the urgency may be doing more work than the product.
Compare the current price
A “70% off” label is less useful than knowing what reputable retailers are charging today. Compare the exact model rather than similar products with different specifications.
Check price-per-unit
For multipacks and consumables, larger packs are not always cheaper per unit. Divide the total price by the number of items or amount included.
Watch for add-ons
Delivery, mandatory subscriptions, replacement filters, proprietary refills and accessories can change the real cost of ownership.
Leave the basket for a moment
If the purchase is not urgent, giving yourself ten minutes can be enough to decide whether you actually want it. A good deal should still make sense after the initial excitement fades.
